Use Essential Oils to Help Prepare for Flu Season

This morning as I sat on a plane from Washington DC back home to Atlanta, I listened to 2 people close to me cough and sneeze and was reminded that the cold and flu season is just around the corner. I immediately took out my homemade han-san and slathered on my, and my daughter’s, hands. I then took the next minute to put my hands in front of my nose and take some deep breaths! Breathing in the wonderful aroma is always my favorite part. (especially on a packed plan with coffee-less people on a 7 AM flight!)

Here are a few items that I will always have close by for me and my family over the next few months to hopefully help us stay just one step ahead of potential sickness!

Hand Sanitizer: This is a basic potent blend that I learned when starting school and I have always been a big fan. With its calming smell, everyone around me wants some too after applied!

1 oz – Aloe Vera Gel*

(please make sure that it is pure, not that green stuff! I like this one, but any pure brand will work!)

15 drops of Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)

5 drops of Orange (Citrus sinensis)

Pour aloe vera into a 1 oz. flip top PET plastic bottle. Add the drops, shake and go! This blend can be used on anyone 2 yrs+.

What is great about this blend is that Lavender is skin nourishing, anti-infectious, antiviral and antibacterial. Orange is an immune stimulant, antidepressant (great for those cold/dark winter months) also anti-infectious, antiviral, antibacterial. Great germ busters without all of those icky chemicals!

Another hand sanitizer blend that I love is Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) and Frankincense (Boswellia carterii). Grapefruit has many of the same therapeutic properties of orange, I just like to mix it up. I also just love the aroma of Grapefruit and Frankincense together. What’s not to love about frankincense that helps to encourage emotional healing and support reflection and introspection? Fight Germs + Chill = Easy Flu Season!

A few other oils that everyone should have handy all flu season are:

Peppermint (Metha x piperita): Relieves headaches caused by congestion (5 yrs+ ok)

Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus): Decongestant; soothes respiratory problems (5 yrs+ ok)

Oregano (Origanum vulgare): Antibacterial; fights sinus infections (5 yrs+ ok)

I like to take a 1 oz glass jar, fill it with unscented lotion and play around with a combination of oils (up to 15-20 drops) until I have an aroma that I (or the person I am using it on) likes. Oregano can be very strong to some noses, so maybe try with Orange or a strong floral, like Neroli (Citrus aurantium var. amara). I suggest using the blend 2-3x/day if you feel something coming on or as needed. If using on children, PLEASE always dilute!
